Vassili Zoulias’ Old Athens

The ’50s were amongst the most influential decades in fashion and style. Whether followed and copied to an iota or being parodied by inventive designers in search of their own identity, one must admit that fifty years ago, fresh from the rubble of the devastating World War II, women in Europe discovered a hidden identity that made them feel comfortable with the power they had acquired while men were away fighting their heads off.

Greece came out of the war a pile of rubble, suffering the worst casualties per total population than any other country. However, women will always be women, and Greek women were determined not to be left behind. The new world order was being formed while the new ruling class of wealthy merchants and young scientists were traveling the world, bringing in new ideas and habits, and making local womenfolk green with envy.

Fifty years later nostalgia knocks our doors as we recall the heavily scented boudoirs of our young and pretty to a string of hair, mothers. Yes, we may have declared our revolution living within our jeans and having our hair loose over our shoulders, but visions of Grace Kelly-esque mothers, aunts, grandmothers and other influential figures in our lives become all the more important as we are rapidly draw closer to their age.

Enter Vassili Zoulias, a stylist of the rebellious 80s, who has discovered his raison d’etre in his late mother’s wardrobe. The talented stylist is experiencing unashamed fulfillment riding his admittedly very stylish mother’s old stuff, finding inspiration for his increasing line of shoes and bags, recently clothes and probably one day soon objets d’ art.

Even though I do now own any of his pieces, I am a big fan of his. I believe he is very talented, with an understanding of female vanity and an eye for translating the old into the most perfectly new. He has recently opened an atelie in a 1957 apartment block in the center of Athens, itself the work of Kapsambelis, a renowned architect of the time. I had met Kapsambelis’ wife through my mother, and I have to say that I still recall her long, lean figure in perfectly tailored clothing that was flattering as it was unassuming. She was a perfect lady, indeed.

Zoulias’ creations pay tribute to an era of promise and hope that we desperately try to emulate in search of our own identity and our own hope among a world that falls apart morally, esthetically and physically. In his work we see reflected the taste of a time when there was time for everything, when life was more carefree, when time was not an issue. We look for the certainties of our peers in the hope of getting in touch with a hidden side of our fast paced lives that is called femininity. It takes a man to point us to it.

Paper (and fabric) love

I am a stationery addict. When my friends were asking their mothers for clothing for their Barbie dolls, I was asking for pens and paper, drawing pencils and sharpeners. I have a thing for pencil sharpeners. And note books.

In my teens I discovered letter writing and that kept me busy well into my twenties. French classes at the Institut Francais were my initiation to the tradition of elegant letter writing.
I was therefore thrilled when I found out that after the beautiful collection of fabrics, the best so far in my opinion, my favorite Greek-American designer and blooming mom,

Byzantine Sun

Anna-Maria Horner adds under her creative belt a brand new collection of stationery.
The collection, featuring Anna-Maria's vibrant designs, includes journals to get creative juices flowing, boxed notes, recipe keepers and organizers for the kitchen. They are destined to be the pride of a happy letter writer and they also make welcome gifts for lady friends of all ages.

Wishing Anna-Maria the best in her new venture!

Vanessa Arbuthnott Fabrics

Last Saturday I posted a Happy Weekend picture, i.e. a picture which represents how I'd like my weekend to be (maybe yours, too?) and I mentioned that I was going to tell you about one of my favorite fabric makers. I hope to do so today.
I came across Vanessa Arbuthnott's fabrics a few years ago through an advertisement in Country Living (UK). I contacted her and that is how my love story with her fabrics begins.

I first dressed an armchair from our shop in her Cockerel fabric (the one below is not mine but very much looks like it).
We dressed the walls in the den in her acorn and leaf wallpaper (now out of stock).

And I am working on our kitchen curtains, that will be made in her Pie in the Sky pattern.

I am also having the armchair above, destined to be my crafts chair in a corner of the living room, just across the den, covered in an Ikea red and green stripe with pillows at the back and on the seat in her Fern and Dragonfly pattern.I really look forward to it!

Here are some more pictures from her website and the lady herself.

I should also not fail to mention what a wonderful sport everyone in her team is. A gem.

Here is wishing you a very pleasant week end!

Sweet beret Dadaya

What is this? I thought when I saw them first.

Tea cosies?

Toadstools?

Why,they're berets, of course~!

They don't come cheap at $120+ but they have a nice, intricate job and you'll have people wondering, too.

They can be bought from Dadaya at Etsy).

This is the girl herself, San San, unique and stylish. And here is her Flickr page and her blog.
I like Japanese quirkiness. Excellent for putting your best foot forward! Happy New Week!

Tribute to YSL

A star travelled back the stars. A small tribute to YSL through images of his house in Dauville.
Lavish color and pattern, rich Moroccan inspiration, the fruit of his collaboration with acclaimed French designer Jacques Grange.
Exquisite style in everything...
inside and out.
Hints of his native North Africa everywhere,
distilled and beautifully combined with the equally bright Central European colors,
down to the everyday details.
Imaginative and daring, colorful and inspired. And True. Heaven will certainly be home.

Ines de la Fressange-Son style

Perfect skin.
Amazing hair
And clean teeth. A lot of women forget about that.
There's a lot of fun to be had if you are not afraid. It's great to have a beautiful bag.
If you are wearing an army-surplus coat, put it with ballet shoes, not heavy boots.
If you are in diamonds, then play them down with a matelot top. Oh, and never wear fur.
Keep an element of punk in your wardrobe - always. Even Chanel was a bit punk; the way she wore jersey and fake jewellery was a rebellion in her day.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes. If you have never put a foot wrong, you're probably too set in your ways.
Look for alternative ways of expressing what you feel: you may not want to wear a fluorescent dress, but how about a pair of tangerine patent shoes?
Dressing head-to-toe in expensive clothes can be as big a mistake as always wearing cheap ones. At every age it's far more effective to mix things up. I like it best when it's not obvious where my clothes come from.
Be open-minded about new labels. It's great to have tried-and-tested ones, but thanks to my two daughters I'm also a regular at H&M, Gap, Isabel Marant, Aspesi and Vanessa Bruno.

Ines Legion d' Honneur

French style icon Ines de la Fressange is to receive the Legion d' Honneur award. The ceremony will take place in Paris on the 18th. There is apparently a certain controvercy as to wether she is "worth it". LOL! There are very few women who epitomise French style, a certain insoucience and Joie de Vivre more than Mme de la Fressange.

On October 2007 I have written a post about Mme de la Fressange with photos of her and her daughters at home. Some time earlier this year I found that she had graciously posted a comment to my post! Now if that is not gallic courteousness, I do not know what is.

I first read it in this post, then checked it on the web. You may want to read this article in The Times and that one, too.

Felicitations, Madame. Avec mon eternelle admiration!

Divine Cordelia

Back in 2007, I wrote this post about the house of Atalanta de Castellane, mother of the marvelous Cordelia, a personal style icon. Cordelia with Ségolène Gallienneare are the dynamic duo behind CdC, the chic children's clothing line.
She is the epitomy of relaxed, confident chic, and an authentic beauty (and she is half-Greek!).
Voici deaux photos de sa maison qui montrent que Cordelia et moi , nous sommes des esprits soeurs. We both lunch on, and we stock for our shop, if I may, a similar table, to say the least.

Bravo, Cordelia. Continuez de nous inspirer!
