Love Domino Style-Calling it a day

Happy Turtle

Call it a high-end rent party: former staffers of Domino, the effervescent decorating magazine that was shuttered in January, are having a tag sale and inviting many of Manhattan’s best decorating talents to spring-clean with them. On Monday, Dara Caponigro (far right), the magazine’s former style director, and Tom Delavan (near right), the former editor at large there, were unpacking boxes in Mr. Delavan’s Greenwich Village town house, pulling together three rooms — over 1,500 square feet — of choice effluvia. “When you are doing shoots, you accumulate a lot of stuff,” Ms. Caponigro said. “It was all just oozing out of my apartment.”

A footed African platter, far right, will be $40; the claw-and-ball-footed table beside it will be $100; the French 18th-century three-legged farm stool in front will be $90. (Prices are negotiable; the decorating advice is free.) Yet to be priced are Verner Panton chairs, John Derian textiles and assorted dhurries and kilims. Former Domino contributors like Rita Konig will also be turning out their storerooms, as will Wendy Goodman, the design editor of New York magazine; Brian Sawyer, an architect; and interior decorators like Katie Ridder and Tom Flynn, among many others. Deborah Needleman, who was Domino’s editor in chief, will be bringing clothes — a wardrobe that includes Lanvin, Prada and Chloé, she said, “fancy party frocks from a nice former life I happily don’t have anymore.”

Saturday, May 9, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 13 West Ninth Street (Fifth Avenue), garden apartment; cash only.

Ce soir le vent qui frappe à ma porte
Me parle des amours mortes
Devant le feu qui s' éteint
Ce soir c'est une chanson d' automne
Dans la maison qui frissonne
Et je pense aux jours lointains

{Refrain:}
Que reste-t-il de nos amours
Que reste-t-il de ces beaux jours
Une photo, vieille photo
De ma jeunesse
Que reste-t-il des billets doux
Des mois d' avril, des rendez-vous
Un souvenir qui me poursuit
Sans cesse
+
Bonheur fané, cheveux au vent
Baisers volés, rêves mouvants
Que reste-t-il de tout cela
Dites-le-moi

Have a joyful Spring week.

Love Domino Style-Last issue

Happy Turtle

Hello,
I hope everyone had a lovely week.
Have you seen any interesting posts about Domino lately?
I have found three Flickr pools to indulge myself in the beauty od fresh, spring fragranced interiors.

Today i'd like to ask you whether you got to leaf through the closing, March 2009 issue of Domino. If you did, why don't you post some pictures on your blog or photostream? Let me know if you do! I'd love to see what they made of the last issue. Apparently they had a feature telling the stories behind the homes of people during different decades of their life. A very American Vogue concept.

Love Domino Style-How did you Domino?

Happy Turtle

Hello Domino loving readers,

Can you recall the excitement of getting your copy at the newsagents'? Or did you subscribe?
Did you open your copy on a bus? At the nearby coffee shop? On your desk at work, perhaps?

Did you carry it everywhere with you, sipping sneak picks whenever you could?

Did you run home
or did you hide it like a bone to read it later?

with good company.

Did you keep your copies, too?

Hello, style lovers,
Today I am going to take you on a tour to a beautiful Athens home, courtesy of a Domino Greece article. It is the home of one of my favorite Greek fashion Designers.
Vassili Zoulias, an 80s stylist and fashion editor turned fashion designer, creates shoes and handbags, which form the backbone of his collection, to which he has added over the years sophisticated dresses and coats, sold from Old Athens shop, in the fashionable Kolonaki district of Athens.

Here he is outside his shop.

At home, a 110m2 apartment overlooking the Athenian Riviera, the atmosphere is one of classic elegance with a fresh twist, sprinkled with childhood nostalgia.

(Look at that floor. It could feel old but it so now.)

Visual prompts and samples of his good taste are to be found everywhere in little niches of perfectly styled bric-a-brac.
As he readily admits, his late mother and the glamorous style of Athens in the 1950s and 60s, is for him the main source of inspiration.
Soft pastels, grey, pistachio, yellow and pink, color the tapestry of the designer's airy and refined universe at home.

.
I hope you enjoyed the tour! See you soon for more beautiful home tours.

Love Domino Style

Happy Turtle

Hello style lovers,

Today in Love Domino Style, we're going to take a look at some more pictures from past issues of Domino Greece.
This is the November 2007 issue, featuring popular singer Despoina Olympiou on its cover. In every issue the guest discussed their favorite objects and style of decoration. Domino has in fact been a magazine of fashion in decoration. Like the In Style supplement, it has linked decoration with fashion styling, as the photo below illustrates.

The only person Greek people had heard of from this issue is Oscar de la Renta. The magazine presented his garden and its layout in an article called "High Gardening".

Illustrated below is another aspect of Domino, profiling business people, making them known to the general public who might need their services but didn't know they existed.
(In this issue, Stirixis, Retail Identity Architecture Construction).

The reason why I picked this issue, though, is because several of is articles summarize what Domino stood for. Stylish and sophisticated, yes, oftentimes eccentric (I loved that), but in a more democratic way, not just for those with money, the wannabes or those in the trade, but also those who were in the know and wanted to find ways of applying what they saw as stylish to their own spaces.

This issue features a special on those very tricks. They include wallpapering, cornicing, adding color to small spaces, and clever concealing.

Also present, two of Domino's trademarks, the zebra rug (that I never liked)

and the art of stylish living in small spaces.

Next week,on Love Domino Style, I shall post about one of my favorite Greek fashion designers and his fabulous, eclectic home. Stay tuned.
